Floating Lantern Ceremony (Lantern Program)

August 8 @ 7:30 pm - 10:00 pm
Free

The 40th Annual Arcata Lantern Floating Ceremony is an opportunity to offer spiritual consolation for everyone affected by the pandemic, those we miss, departed loved ones, ancestors and all we hold dear.

The City of Arcata’s Nuclear Free Zone Committee began this ceremony 39 years ago to commemorate the US atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945 and to affirm our dedication as a community to the cause of peace, to bring awareness to the dangers of nuclear proliferation, and to advocate for environmental sustainability.

In the morning (9am – 1:30pm) there will be Lantern Making, with all supplies provided, at the Arcata Farmer’s Market (9th and G streets). Then around 7:00pm people will gather at the Arcata Marsh & Wildlife Sanctuary by Klopp Lake at the end of South I Street for the ceremony. 8:40pm – Lantern Floating.
