The Studio and Canvas + Clay Gallery present : SARA DORY, a retrospective of works created by the artist over the eight years she attended The Studio: 2015-2023.
Dory is an avid fan of many pop culture icons, from wrestlers to Lynda Carter. She prolifically draws and paints her favorite television personalities, animals, wrestlers, and sports stars. Through inquiry and research, she learns more about her favorite stars, such as where they live and who they are married to. Among her portraits are famous powerhouses of women, including Dolly Parton along side her husband and Lynda Carter with either of her husbands. Being a longtime admirer of Lynda Carter in her famous portrayal of Wonder Woman, an entire exhibition wall will be dedicated to the beloved superhero. Included in this wall will be paintings of all the Wonder Woman merchandise that Sara hopes to purchase one day.
Sara Dory’s process usually begins with a line drawing of her subject in sharpie pen. Her drawing style is loose but consistent with certain characteristics: large heads with small eyes, ears and noses. Tiny feet and hands come with an endearing excess of fingers. She paints boldly, breaking through the barriers of her own line work. She paints in watercolors on paper and acrylics on acetate so that her line work can still be prominent in the piece and appreciated by the viewer. The colors on her palette mix slightly with her back ground color and create an airy and calming scene for her subjects.
